Susanna & Painting in Provence

Dates are hard to come by in Susanna's amazing career. There is a date, and a place, for when she started watercolour painting [September 1994, Maratea, Italy] - a late transition to a very different medium which she soon made her own.
The date for the first of a long history of oil paintings... She says it was a "Lawrence Carmine thistle from the South Downs", aged 8-10

That was a friend of mine, a friend from France.
What's her name?
Susanna Linhart.
And what about this picture?
That's also by Susanna Linhart. She was very good at getting an impression, a quick impression of anything. She could do children, and children are extremely difficult to get a likeness of, very very difficult, because they don't stand still for a moment. But she could do that, she could actually get the right expression.

I got to know Susanna very soon after I moved to the village.
She had an energy which was captivating. I was very quickly drawn to her art.
As well as her stories, the athlète rescued as he sought to escape returning with his team the universe of the USSR, which he was trying to escape from. She hid him in her flat. Then there was the tale of the sinking yacht which was saved from the seas by appropriate use of her canvases.
her daily routine began with collecting produce from her vegetable garden, taking it to her studio, painting it, and then to her kitchen to use it to prepare lunch.
Nothing was ever wasted. And her work showed her that same commitment and enthusiasm.
Her sense of love and warmth came through in her irrepressible hospitality.
She is already missed in the village

... while subject matter has changed with the location, there is some comfort in the thought that Susanna's style has probably changed less over the years than that of many other professionals. A childlike need to capture the joys of seeing every day conspires with a divine sense of colour and sureness of line and
composition that have grown only stronger with age.
Susanna succeeds in gratifying this essentially domestic passion with an alacrity that is the despair of critics - and would be the envy of other artists if they knew!
